A great and hilarious article by the New York Times columnist Maureen Down about Santorum’s religious fanaticism.
Rick Santorum has been called a latter-day Savonarola.
That’s far too grand. He’s more like a small-town mullah.
“Satan has his sights on the United States…
Re-blogged for awesomeness.
Am I wrong in being offended that he’s being compared to a mullah? I’d get it if she’d compared him to some specific small-minded bigoted asswipe, but the generality of it equates ALL mullahs to be as ignorant and dickish as Santorum. I get what the point she’s trying to make, but fuck am I tired of the “all Islamic teachers/preachers/religious leaders” (and by extension all Muslims) are ignorant, backward-thinking fools.
I thought about that, but I took a broader view, as she did couch it as “small town mullah.” It could have been “small town preacher” for that matter, but even that has its stereotypical quirks. I thought it went well with the piece, but now that I am reading your objection, I do so a need for a little more circumspection.
