George Whitman, the American-born owner of Shakespeare & Company, a fabled English-language bookstore on the Left Bank in Paris and a magnet for writers, poets and tourists for close to 60 years, died on Wednesday. He was 98.
“I wanted a bookstore because the book business is the business of life,” he once said.
R.I.P., sir.
One of my favorite places in Paris.
BRB going to go hug my copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance with the Shakespeare & Co. stamp on the inside cover.
Just heard about this on The BBC Newshour. Was just reading about it the Hedy Lamarr biography I’m reading, and fondly remembered Midnight in Paris. He will be missed.
